Sovereign Assets

Everyone measures what a nation owes. We measure what it owns.

Water, land, people, coastline, forest, energy and institutions. Recorded nation by nation, so that what a country holds can finance what its people are owed.

  • 136Assets recorded

The rationale

A balance sheet with one side missing

Every nation publishes what it owes. Almost none records what it owns. Perfect Nations writes the second column.

The Perfect Nations Steward

Five assets

Assets no national account has counted

Power, sea, ground, route and people: five kinds of national wealth, five nations with an open blueprint.

Sun, Wind & Power 42GW of hydropower potential at one site, on one river

Inga Falls

DR Congo

The Congo carries the second-largest flow of any river on Earth, after the Amazon. Inga 1 and Inga 2 have harnessed about 1.8 GW of it. The rest still runs to the sea.

Beneath the Ground No.1 diamond mine in the world by value

Jwaneng

Botswana

Owned in equal shares by the Government of Botswana and De Beers, through Debswana: a structure that keeps half the value of the ground with the nation that holds it.

Position & Institutions 1,289km of railway from the Atlantic to the Congo border

The Lobito Corridor

Angola, DR Congo and Zambia

The Benguela line runs from the port of Lobito to Luau: the shortest route from the mineral belts of the Congo and Zambia to the sea. A route is an asset. It earns every time something moves along it.
