Nation Portraits

Every nation is painted twice here. Once as a balance sheet, and once as a bloom. The portrait is the same argument as the blueprint — that a country already holds what it needs — made in a language a finance ministry cannot put in a drawer.

The works

Three of one hundred and ninety-five

The series is painted one nation at a time, to a fixed formula, so that all 195 will one day hang together as a single work. These are the first three.

Hindu Kush in Bloom · Afghanistan · folk-art gouache, 1:1

Work 01

Afghanistan

Hindu Kush in Bloom

The Hindu Kush rises as a flame-shaped bloom in the black, red and green of the flag — endurance rendered as a living, flowering summit.

The Trident in Bloom · Barbados · folk-art gouache, 1:1

Work 02

Barbados

The Trident in Bloom

Where the old flag breaks, this one begins again — the trident flowers in the flag’s own ultramarine and gold.

The Thousand Hills in Bloom · Rwanda · folk-art gouache, 1:1

Work 03

The Thousand Hills in Bloom

A thousand hills unfold as a flowering wave in the flag’s blue, yellow and green — terrain rendered as quiet abundance.

How a portrait is built

Six rules, applied to every nation without exception. It is what will let 195 separate paintings read as one work rather than 195 commissions.

  1. The landmark becomes a plant.The nation’s defining natural feature — a range, a reef, a river, a plain — is redrawn as a radiant blossoming form.
  2. The national flower, oversized.Botanically detailed and unfurling beside the central form, at a scale it would never have in life.
  3. The national fruit or crop.Trailing alongside as a second botanical line — Afghanistan’s pomegranate, Barbados’s sugarcane.
  4. An animal, as ornament.Never a literal portrait of the animal. It curls into the composition like a living vine or a heraldic flourish.
  5. The flag, used literally. The exact flag colours as bold saturated fields, and the background sectioned to echo the flag’s real layout. No sunset palettes.
  6. One medium, always.Maximalist folk-art botanical illustration — flat gouache colour blocking, gold scrollwork, fine vine linework, square format.

Rule one has four honest answers. Every nation on Earth is one of these.

Peak96 nationsMountain, volcano, escarpment. Petals open upward like a summit.
Wave55 nationsCoast, reef, atoll, river, wetland. Petals ripple outward like a crest.
Dune24 nationsDesert, salt flat, oasis. Petals unfurl in wind-sculpted ridges.
Field19 nationsPlain, steppe, canopy, farmland. Petals spread in horizon-wide rows.

Ninety-six plus fifty-five plus twenty-four plus nineteen is 194. The one that is left is the Holy See, which has no landscape — it is the only architectural portrait in the series.

03 · Commission

Your nation, painted

On application

For a government, a mission, a foundation or a diaspora association: your nation’s portrait painted to the formula, with its blueprint written alongside it.

Commission a portrait →

Print editions are in preparation. Prices shown are opening positions and are confirmed in writing before any commission begins.

192

Nations not yet painted

Including, in all likelihood, yours. The order is not fixed. A commission moves a nation to the front of the series and it is painted next.

Put your nation next

The painting is the invitation.

The blueprint is what happens after someone accepts it.
