Dear India,
You are 1.46 billion people, and you have brought electricity to 99.9 percent of yourselves. By the end of September 2026 you had installed 171 gigawatts of solar power and 299 gigawatts of renewable capacity in all. In January 2023 your central bank auctioned your first sovereign green bonds, 16,000 crore rupees in five- and ten-year paper. On six of the seven standards Perfect Nations measures, you stand above 80 percent. That is a scale of delivery the world has rarely seen.
The seventh is health. Your service coverage stands at 69 on the World Health Organization index, the standard furthest below the Living Line. You spend about $85 a person a year on health. The wire reached the house. Care has not yet reached the person inside it.
“You wired a nation of 1.46 billion. Care is the next network to build.”
Two other numbers keep the Living Line honest. One in ten of you is still undernourished, on a land three-fifths farmed. And 16.1 percent of you lived on less than $4.20 a day in 2023, the World Bank line for a nation at your income. Neither is furthest below the Living Line today. Both would, if health moved and they did not.
Your finance is built state by state: World Bank programmes for farms in Uttar Pradesh, bridges in Assam, cities in Tamil Nadu, forests in Tripura and Nagaland, and a $1.5 billion programme for low-carbon energy. The instruments exist. What does not yet exist is a single measure that every one of them reports against, so that a citizen in any state can see the nation rise toward the Living Line. You wired a nation of 1.46 billion. Care is the next network to build.
Yours in design,
