Dear Ghana,

Red, gold and green, with the Black Star of African freedom at the centre. You were the first nation south of the Sahara to win its independence, and you have just completed one of the hardest economic recoveries on the continent.

“You brought your economy back from the edge. Now bring a safe toilet to every Ghanaian home.”

Yours in design,Preeti SinhaPresident and CEO, Perfect Nations Read the full letter

Sovereign Assets

Five assets no balance sheet counts.

Each is owned today, earns today, and can lift Ghana closer to Perfect Capita.

  • 01

    The People

    35.1mCitizens, 2025

59 in every hundred live in towns and cities; the rest live on the land they farm and fish.

  • 02

    The Land

55.4%Of land in farms and pasture

The land that feeds the nation, and the first place a citizen dividend can be earned.

  • 03

    The Forest

    30.9%Of land under forest

Standing forest holds the water, soil and carbon that the world will pay to keep.

  • 04

    The Water

914 m³Renewable fresh water per person

Below the scarcity line of 1,000 cubic metres: every drop must be stored, treated and reused.

  • 05

    The Power

    34.9%Of energy from renewables, 2021

Sun, wind, water and biomass already carry part of the load; the rest is the opportunity.

What each asset is worth, and how far it can carry Ghana toward Perfect Capita, is the question our research and our guests take up below.

The Living LineThe poverty line measures income. The Living Line measures a life: food, water, shelter, energy, education, health and livelihood. Perfect Capita is the yearly cost, per person, of lifting everyone above the Living Line in all seven basic living standards. Coverage scores each standard strictly out of 100, and a nation is held at its weakest: Ghana at 18.8, by shelter, with energy at 35 and water at 42.9 next.

Perfect Nations estimate, to be confirmed with Ghana. Figures marked dated rest on surveys more than five years old; lenient measures are marked as such. The strict measures

Strict measures. Food: share not moderately or severely food insecure (FAO). Water: safely managed drinking water where measured; where it is not, basic water, marked as such. Shelter: the lower of safely managed sanitation and the share outside urban slums. Energy: the lower of electricity per person against 1,000 kWh and clean cooking. Education: the lower of children reading by the end of primary school and lower-secondary completion. Health: WHO service coverage index. Livelihood: share above the stricter of the national poverty line and the World Bank line for the nation’s income group. Each figure links to its source.
