The DR Congo blueprint
Perfect Nations™ · Letters to the NationsDR Congo

Dear Congo,

The sky blue of your flag stands for peace, the red for the blood of your martyrs, the yellow for the wealth of your land, and the star for a radiant future. Since 1960 you have carried the heart of a continent: the great forest of the Congo Basin, a river of immense power, and minerals the whole world now needs.

Think of what you already hold. In 2025 you mined 230,000 tonnes of cobalt, about three of every four tonnes on Earth, and you hold half the world’s known reserves. At Inga, your river carries the potential for some 42,000 megawatts of power. Three-fifths of your land is still forest. In April 2026 you went to the international bond market for the first time, and investors offered more than $5.2 billion for a $1.25 billion bond. Inflation has stayed at or below 2.5 percent since October 2025, and growth has run above 5.5 percent.

At home the record is just as real. In North Kivu, a Congolese utility runs four hydropower plants and serves more than 35,000 customers. A distributor of clean stoves has put more than 400,000 products into homes through 3,500 sales agents. A learning platform built in Kinshasa now works with 6,000 schools and 105,000 teachers. In Bukavu, a hospital founded in 1999 has cared for women through the worst of times, and its founder received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.

The work ahead is plain, and it is worth saying plainly. At the last count, in 2019, ninety-seven of every hundred children reached the end of primary school unable to read a simple text. Only one household in twenty cooks with clean fuel, and fewer than one in four of you has electricity. One in eight drinks safely managed water at home, and more than eight in ten cannot always count on enough good food. Reading sets your Coverage today, at 3 out of 100, with power close behind. Each of them is within your reach.

Now imagine the wealth beneath your ground turned toward every home above it. Picture Perfect DR Congo: a morning when every child in Kinshasa, Kananga and Goma walks into a classroom with the lights on and a teacher waiting, and reads with ease by the age of ten; when Inga’s power reaches the pump, the clinic and the cold store; when every family cooks with clean fuel and drinks clean water from its own tap; when the farmer sells at a fair price and the forest pays those who protect it. And no Congolese citizen falls below a decent life, because the nation has decided that none will.

None of this needs a miracle. It needs what you already own: your cobalt and copper, Inga, the forest, the river, your young people, and the trust the markets have now shown you. They are assets no balance sheet counts, and together they can carry every Congolese citizen to food, water, shelter, energy, education, health and a livelihood.

“The batteries of the energy transition begin in your ground. Let the first thing they power be a classroom with the lights on.”

So this is an invitation. Bring your vision, your story and your solutions to the Perfect DR Congo Design Studio, and join the Co-designers who are already imagining what comes next. Perfect DR Congo will not be designed for you. It will be designed by you.

Yours in design,
