Perfect Nations™ · Letters to the NationsKenya

# Dear Kenya,

You make four-fifths of your electricity from sun, wind, water and the heat beneath
the Rift. In the year to June 2025, 80.17 percent of the power you generated came
from renewable sources, and 943.7 megawatts of it came from geothermal wells that
run day and night whatever the weather. Few nations of any size own clean baseload
power. You built it, field by field.

Here is what the grid does not yet show. You generated 14,472 gigawatt hours for
some 57.5 million people, about 252 kilowatt hours each, a quarter of the 1,000
kilowatt hours the Living Line sets for a dignified life. Seventy-seven percent
of you are connected. The wires reached the house before the power reached the work.

> “The heat under the Rift is the rarest asset you own. The task now is to carry
> it to the clinic, the tap and the field.”

Kenya falls short of the Living Line in four places at once. Health service coverage
stands at 57 on the World Health Organization index. In 2022, 39.8 percent of you
lived below the national poverty line. More than a third of you are undernourished,
on land that is half farmed. Two in three have basic drinking water. None of these
is far from the others, and under the weakest-link rule none can rise alone: a clinic
without water and power cannot do its work, and a farm without water and income
cannot feed a family.

In February 2025 you borrowed $1.5 billion at 9.5 percent to buy back a bond due
in 2027. That is the price of capital for a nation that the market still reads by
its debts rather than by its assets. Barbados has shown that a guarantee from the
multilateral banks can replace costly debt with cheaper debt, and that the savings
can be written into the loan as targets a citizen can feel. The same design, aimed
at health, water and power together, would let your clean grid carry the rest of
the Living Line. You have already done the hardest part. The heat is yours. The
work now is to spend it on people.

Yours in design,

**The Steward-General**
